The Political Action Committee of the New York State Society of Orthopaedic Surgeons, or "The OrthoPAC of NY," is the only state political action committee in New York dedicated solely to representing orthopaedic surgeons. Many aspects of orthopaedic practice are affected by decisions made in Albany. The OrthoPAC of NY's main priority is to give orthopaedic surgeons a voice in these discussions and ensure that PAC contributions are effectively disbursed to advocate for the orthopaedic profession.

About the PAC

OrthoPAC of NY gives orthopaedic surgeons the opportunity to help shape legislation that affects their practice by making political contributions to candidates running for state office. The PAC is nonpartisan, contributing to Democrats, Republicans, and other party groups who share and support our views.

Another job of the OrthoPAC of NY is to facilitate opportunities to interact with state Senators and Assemblymembers.

By promoting strong working relationships, the PAC establishes an open line of communication between the orthopaedic community and elected officials.

The OrthoPAC of NY is vital to our success on numerous critical fronts, not the least of which are reversing onerous prior authorization practices, defeating scope of practice proposals that would diminish patient outcomes, limiting potential future covid-19-related moratoria on elective procedures, and many other pressing issues.

FAQs

When the OrthoPAC of NY makes a contribution  it sends a strong, collective, and clear message from orthopaedic surgeons to a particular candidate. Simply put: there is strength in numbers.

What is a Political Action Committee (PAC)?
A PAC enables employees or members of groups - such as corporations and professional organizations - to pool their political contributions and support candidates who will help the organization achieve its legislative objectives.

What is the difference between corporate contributions and personal contributions?

Corporate contributions include checks and credit cards cut on a physicians' business account (LLC, PC, or Inc.). Personal contributions are checks and credit cards from a physicians' personal account.

The NYS Election Law places aggregate calendar year limits on the amount of political contributions that can be made by individuals and corporations.
  • An individual may contribute up to a total of $150,000.00 in a calendar year.

  • A corporation may contribute up to a total of $5,000.00 in a calendar year.

  • Sole Proprietorships, LLCs, PLLCs, LLPs and PLLPs and partnerships are treated as contributions from an individual for political contribution limits

  • A corporation usually has “PC”, “Inc.” or “Ltd” in its name.

For more information about NYS political contribution limits go to the website of the NYS Board of Elections

Please consult your legal counsel if you have any question pertaining to the possible impact of political contributions on the tax exempt status of the corporation.

Who decides where the money goes?
